Weekend Game Project

update (midnight):

So it was Anarcherils birthday today so we ended up getting much less accomplished than anticipated. XD
However, we did finish the mechanics and came up with all the different towers and structures.  Anarcheril made a couple of buildings so far (first one took a while as we had to find a style we both agreed on).  Finished class/structures.  Anyway it is coming along – hopefully next weekend I can finish it =]

———————————————————————————————————————-

I decided that I will make a 1v1 multiplayer TD game today.  I will be working with my good friend and artist Anarcheril.  If all goes as planned we should have something ready by midnight tonight (EST time).

One interesting thing about this rendition is that we decided to eliminate waves in the traditional sense.  You can now manage your own waves and even group multiple waves at once or send units individually.  As a result, the game is MUCH more intense and plays like a mix between an RTS and a TD game.

Another interesting feature is the way the economy is implemented.  I don’t want to go into much detail about this now as I want it to be a surprise. But basically, the further your army travels into enemy territory the more money you collect (as well as from destroying buildings, units, and banks).  Basically this promotes sending out units instead of just building defense  and waiting until the end to send an unstoppable army.

The theme for the game is desert/Egyptian which I personally think is very pretty and interesting – a nice change from the common castle or modern themes.
Finally – I am making a dx9 version in Gamestudio and later I’ll carefully port it to my own dx11 engine (Anarcheril doesn’t have dx11 atm so we decided on this).

The game will have a semi-realistic NPR style featuring sun shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion.  It will be rendered isometrically with the ability to move the screen across the world as well as zoom in and out.  I’ll probably include a mini-map and tool-tip functionality.  For slow machines you can disable all but basic dot(Normal,Sun_Vector) lighting.

I don’t have a server (can’t afford one) for the game but I will look into alternatives or you can always play LAN games.  I’ll probably also create a public hamachi address where the game can connect to and allow you to find others online and connect to play with them automatically (obviously you would need hamachi for this feature).
